Former Austrian leader Kurz convicted of lying to parliament

ER Editor: A reminder that wunderkind Sebastian Kurz came from the stable of WEF Young Global Leaders. Austria has been a very Soros-friendly place, exhibiting some of the worst excesses of the tyrannical Covid period. Kurz was operating well within that agenda despite appearing fakely ‘populist’ over immigration. Kurz started to fail around October of 2021, curiously around the time Gladys Berejiklian, premier of New South Wales, also took a fall. Since then, many have withdrawn from public life or have declared themselves to be in the process. Here’s a list, but we suspect there are many more —

Continuation of the Kurz saga from 2021. In the article below, we learn that not only was he rescued by Peter Thiel, who employed him as a ‘consultant’ and lobbyist, but that he started up a cybersecurity firm in Israel with one Shalev Hulio, the co-founder of Pegasus spy software company. There are also other charges he faces.

An Austrian court found Sebastian Kurz, the country’s former chancellor, guilty late Friday of making false statements to a parliamentary investigatory committee, sealing a dramatic fall from grace for the one-time Wunderkind many once saw as the future of European conservatism. Judge Michael Radasztics handed Kurz, 37, an eight-month suspended sentence for deceiving parliament under oath, a felony, during a 2020 investigation into his government. The court acquitted Kurz on two other similar counts.

Kurz called the decision “very unfair,” insisting that he had done nothing illegal. “Thank goodness we live under the rule of law and have the possibility to challenge a decision,” he said. “I’m very optimistic that we will be vindicated on appeal.”

In the meantime, a political comeback for Kurz, who now works as a consultant in the private sector, is unlikely.

Kurz’s success in leading the Austrian People’s Party to two commanding victories in 2017 and 2019 made the slick brand of right-wing populism he pioneered a model for stodgy centrist parties across Europe.

The Austrian’s fairytale rise from unknown youth leader into an international political star and chancellor at just 30 ended abruptly in October 2021, however, when he was forced to resign amid a flurry of accusations of corruption.

Prosecutors indicted Kurz for giving false testimony to parliament while testifying before a special committee investigating whether he played a role in selecting a new head and board members for the state holding company known as ÖBAG.

Kurz insisted he hadn’t played a direct role, but private text exchanges between the former chancellor, his aides and other associates that subsequently came to light suggested otherwise, according to the prosecution’s case.
