ER Editor: While this story is being reported quite rightly as an own goal by 77 year old Demented Joe, we remind readers of other stories we’ve published about today’s crop of bio-ethicists, ‘ethics’ being an optimistic term to use about such basically technocratic, morally bankrupt people. The increasing outsourcing of health-care policy to medical bureaucrats during the COVID-19 crisis illustrates the dangerous temptation to remove control over policy from democratic deliberation in favor of a technocracy, i.e., rule by “experts.” In health care, such a system would be particularly perilous since the experts placed in charge of policy would be “bioethicists” whose predominant views disparage the sanctity of human life.

Here is the terrifying problem. The most influential of our would-be health-care overlords hold immoral and amoral values not shared by most of those who would be impacted by their policy prescriptions. For example, most mainstream practitioners reject the belief that human beings have unique value and — unless they have a modifier such as “Catholic” or “pro-life” in front of their identifier — embrace a utilitarian “quality of life” approach to medical decision-making, according to which some of us are judged to have greater worth than others based on discriminatory criteria such as cognitive capacity, state of health, and age.

It was imperative the Deep State destroy Christianity, especially Catholicism, in the West in order for this technocratic, amoral worldview to be able to take hold. The cultural shifts since the 1960s are coming into clearer view.

Emanuel was an advisor to the Obama administration, and is brother to Rahm Emanuel. Rahm served as White House Chief of Staff from 2008-2010 in the Obama administration, becoming Mayor of Chicago up to 2019.

Joe Biden, who is 77, has appointed to his coronavirus task force Dr Ezekiel J. Emanuel, who has argued that for most people “creativity, originality and productivity are pretty much gone” by 75. Will Lloyd in UnHerd has the details.

Six years ago, a distinguished American oncologist published an essay in The Atlantic. In ‘Why I Hope to Die at 75’ Dr Ezekiel J. Emanuel argued that for most people “creativity, originality and productivity are pretty much gone” by 75.

Accordingly, society as a whole would be improved if nature took “its course swiftly and promptly”. Medicine has extended life spans, but it has done little to make life worth living in old age, Emanuel argued at the time:

“Here is a simple truth that many of us seem to resist: living too long is also a loss. It renders many of us, if not disabled, then faltering and declining, a state that may not be worse than death but is nonetheless deprived. It robs us of our creativity and ability to contribute to work, society, the world. It transforms how people experience us, relate to us, and, most important, remember us. We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic.”

On Monday, Dr Emanuel was one of 10 advisory board members appointed to Joe Biden’s coronavirus task force. This is potentially awkward for Biden – not least because at 77 he is a few months beyond the age Dr Emanuel believes we cease to be much use to anyone.
