The rally was staged by the two major trade unions — the General Union of Workers (UGT) and the Workers’ Commissions (CCOO). The protesters are demanding an increase in salaries and pensions and calling for the government to eliminate poverty and inequality.
“We will not allow our rights to be stolen, we will not allow the continuation of reduction in public spending, which we have witnessed in recent years. We are seeking to restore our rights… We will continue such protests for as long as necessary,” UGT General Secretary Pepe Alvarez said.
The Spanish left-wing Podemos party and Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), as well as the United Left have supported the rally.
In late November, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that the government would not cancel the reforms and that Madrid would meet all deficit targets.
