MAJOR! Russia DEFENDS Venezuela From U.S. Attempts To Provoke Civil WAR

CARACAS, VenezuelaRussia’s position on the recognition of Nicolás Maduro as legitimate president of Venezuela will not change, despite the fact that several states have recognized the opposition leader as the president of the Latin American country, Andrei Klimov, a member of the upper house, said on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó (pictured), the opposition’s new president of the National Assembly, told a rally in Caracas that he vowed to take over the executive powers.

The United States, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Paraguay and others have recognized him as interim president of Venezuela.

“Russia has already recognized the legally elected president of Venezuela Maduro, [Deputy Mayor Ilyas] Umakhanov was at the inauguration and expressed congratulations. Nothing will change in his position [in Russia],” said Klimov, who serves as vice- chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the Russian Upper House.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized the West’s interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs. Earlier, Nicolas Maduro announced the breakup of diplomatic relations with the United States in retaliation for the recognition of Juan Guaidó as interim Venezuelan president. Maduro has now given the US less than three days to evacuate all diplomatic staff from the country, an action Washington might not take.

“The events in Venezuela show how the progressive Western community is actually dealing with international law, sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of states, deliberately changing power there,” Zakharova wrote on her Facebook page.

The situation in Venezuela worsened considerably after the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro, who was sworn in again on January 10. Member countries of the Lima Group – among them Brazil – decided not to recognize the new mandate. Subsequently, Brazil, Paraguay, Canada and the United States decided to recognize the president of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó as the interim president of the country.
