Romanian election exit polls: Hard-right Trump fan George Simion wins first round
BUCHAREST — George Simion, the hard-right leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, is projected to win the first round of Romania’s presidential election, with more than 30 percent of the vote, according to exit polls.
It was not immediately clear which candidate would place second, with establishment figurehead Crin Antonescu and centrist Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan battling to face Simion in the runoff. Former Prime Minister Victor Ponta is set to finish in fourth place, the exit polls say.

Exit polls: Far-right Simion to advance as Romania set for tense presidental run-off
George Simion is projected to win the first round of Romania’s presidential election – he’ll likely face pro-European Crin Antonescu in the run-off.
EURACTIV
BUCHAREST – Romania is heading for a deeply polarised presidential election run-off after Sunday’s first round exit polls suggested a surging far right candidate should face a pro-European moderate.
George Simion, leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians-party (AUR), is projected to secure place in the second round of the presidential election, according to preliminary results released on Sunday night.
Simion, who only placed fourth in the annulled presidential elections last November, has won the most votes with around 30% according to exit polls, outperforming several mainstream candidates.
He is likely to face centrist coalition candidate, Crin Antonescu from the National Liberal party, whom exit polls suggested had won around 23%.
Turnout is estimated at 53%, with an estimated 9.5 million people casting their ballot.
The run-off, scheduled for May 18, is expected to be fiercely contested.
…
Simion cast his vote on Sunday morning alongside Georgescu. “The time has come to reclaim our country from the scoundrels,” declared Georgescu, whom Simion has said he would appoint prime minister if victorious.
If the result suggested by exit polls is confirmed, it would set up a high-stakes second round that will determine Romania’s future direction on foreign policy, judicial reform and relations with the European Union, as well as the country’s support for Ukraine.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
