Macron Loses Absolute Majority in Parliament as Frustrated MPs DEFECT to New Left Grouping

ER Editor: Yes, the wheels are coming off somewhat for Macron, and given post-COVID lawsuits and other types of unrest expected to flareup, it may not get any better either.

As RT reports below, Macron just lost 7 of his deputies, which isn’t insignificant, who have gone to a new party comprising around 20 members so far, groupe EDS (Écologie, Démocratie, Solidarité), which promotes the usual causes of today’s so-called ‘left’ – ecological transition (to what exactly?), social justice, UBI, gender parity, pro-migrant, etc. One high-profile defector, Aurélien Taché, came to Macron’s party (LREM) originally from the Parti Socialiste (PS), Francois Hollande’s former party and France’s major centre left party, which ordinary people have long since recognized isn’t defending them, hence the Gilets Jaunes. So for Taché, it was PS, then LREM, now EDS – a typical trajectory of other defectors, too. The messy state of France’s official left, who still can’t bring themselves to identify with the suffering of the ordinary French person of any skin colour, who needs a paying job and a place in the economy.

And this from Politico.eu yesterday (MSM warning) as to Macron’s current approval rating, referred to by RT:

Europe’s leaders are coming under increasing scrutiny from voters over their response to the coronavirus crisis.

As national capitals have begun treading a complex path of gradually easing lockdown restrictions, polling suggests that leaders are starting to lose the sky-high poll ratings they benefitted from at the height of the pandemic.

Back in mid-March, when lockdowns were being rushed through across the Continent, all governments enjoyed a surge in popular support — a common phenomenon in times of national crisis. But recent polls suggest the shine is starting to come off.

France

President Emmanuel Macron, whose support had been declining steadily for three years, experienced a surge at the beginning of the crisis, as did leaders around the world. But since April, the number of people who trust Macron and his government to effectively tackle the coronavirus crisis has been headed downward. According to the pollster Ifop, taking the political temperature for Le Journal du Dimanche, at the end of March, 55 percent of respondents expressed confidence in the government’s handling of the crisis, but by the end of April it was down to 39 percent. The most recent update of the same poll, in mid-May, when the first confinement measures were lifted, saw the approval rating rise to 44 percent. In terms of overall job approval ratings, Macron remains steady at around 40 percent.

Macron loses absolute majority in parliament as frustrated MPs DEFECT to new left-leaning grouping

Emmanuel Macron has lost his outright majority in France’s National Assembly as a group of defectors from his LREM party jumped ship to join a new left-wing grouping, in another indication of his floundering leadership.

Seven lawmakers announced a split from President Macron’s La Republique En Marche (LREM) on Tuesday, saying they would join the newly-formed ‘Ecology, Democracy, Solidarity’ (EDS) group, which now consists of 17 parliamentarians who are demanding more left-leaning policies.

“I am a leftist. To remain so, I must leave LREM,” one of the breakaway MPs, Aurelien Tache, told Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper.

LREM is left with only 288 MPs, leaving Macron one person short of the 289 needed for an outright majority in the lower house of parliament. Macron’s government will likely still be able to rely on the support of the centrist MoDem party, but the loss of a majority for the president will offer them more leverage over policy.

The defections are another blow for Macron as he attempts to get his halted political agenda back on track following weeks of protests against his pension reforms, destabilizing transport strikes and more than a year of anti-government Yellow Vest demonstrations (ER: we had seen 72 Saturdays of protests up to the lockdown on March 16).

Like many world leaders, the Covid-19 crisis offered Macron a sudden popularity boost in March as the pandemic took hold and governments were forced to act quickly. Macron’s approval rating surged to between 46-51 percent during the month.

The satisfaction with the French leader was short-lived, however, as his approval rating fell eight points back to 43 percent in April, with many unhappy with his handling of the Covid-19 outbreak, which has killed more than 28,000 people in France so far.

The new EDS group said it will side “neither with the majority, nor the opposition,” but will vote according to its own political agenda.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
