ER Editor: Some Twitter/X reaction to this choice of French PM. Politico.eu gives a favorable reading of Michel Barnier as PM, but more reliable voices are firmly against for very good reason —

Translation: The people voted 3 times against #Macron and they got Michel #Barnier, 100% Macron-compatible: ultra-European, ultra-Covidist, ultra-techno! This is the new definition of “democracy” in a pro-European oligarchic regime!  Voting for Barnier’s censure is an imperative for anyone who loves France! Obviously!

Translation: And now here is the Michel hypothesis #Barnier for Matignon!  Some reminders: – He was already a member of parliament almost 50 years ago. – He was a European Commissioner several times: he advocated for the European army, the European Constitution, the Lisbon Treaty, he acted underhandedly against Brexit, etc. – In July 2021 he called for “compulsory covid vaccination for all French people”! : ouest-france.fr/sante/vaccin/c  An immediate #MotionDeCensure is the only possible option if he is appointed!

Translation: Michel Barnier is a politician who has always worked against national sovereignty and in favour of the dismantling of France for the benefit of the EU. Supporter of the betrayal of the 2005 referendum and in favour of the disastrous Maastricht Treaty. There is not much to expect.

Translation: So France, which voted for almost everything except Michel Barnier, will have Michel Barnier. Play all you want, in the end the casino always wins.

Translation: Covid 19: Michel Barnier in favour of compulsory vaccination for everyone. 

Translation: By appointing Michel Barnier as Prime Minister, Emmanuel Macron is clearly displaying his total submission to Ms Von der Leyen’s Brussels Commission. This government is stillborn because nothing will come of a policy massively rejected by the French in the last European and legislative elections. Only the departure of Emmanuel Macron will be able to resolve the serious political crisis that our country is experiencing.

Translation: We are waiting for Michel Barnier’s general policy speech. Uncontrolled immigration, the explosion of insecurity, the purchasing power of the French and the modification of the voting method are subjects which will have to be taken into consideration.

Macron appoints Michel Barnier as new PM, hoping to end political impasse

Former Brexit negotiator now faces the difficult task of forming a government.

PARIS  — French President Emmanuel Macron has tapped former chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier as France’s next prime minister, the Elysée said in a statement on Thursday, ending a nearly two-month-long search that paralyzed the government.

Barnier served four times as a cabinet minister and twice as a European commissioner before becoming the head of the Brexit task force in 2016. A conservative figure from the Les Républicains party (ER: centrist-globalist right), he is a familiar face in Brussels but less known at home.

“This nomination comes after an unprecedented cycle of consultations, and in view of his constitutional duty, the president made sure that the prime minister and its government will have the most stable conditions possible,” the Elysée Palace said in a written statement.

Barnier will now begin the arduous task of forming a government that won’t be immediately collapsed by a deeply divided French legislature. Snap elections this summer delivered a hung parliament, with the pan-left New Popular Front securing the most seats but falling short of an absolute majority. (ER: A reminder that the majority of citizens, between 10 and 11 million, voted for Le Pen and associated groups.) Macron refused to appoint the alliance’s candidate for prime minister, 37-year-old civil servant Lucie Castets, arguing that she was not in a position to govern with stability.

The pan-left coalition was predictably furious with the nomination. Its members had repeatedly accused Macron of subverting the will of voters (ER: Cue, irony) and ignoring the results of an election he decided to call. But Macron in recent days appeared to be eyeing a right-wing prime minister to protect his controversial pensions reform, which the left had vowed to unravel if they came to power.

Socialist Party head Olivier Faure said Macron’s decision to nominate a prime minister whose party finished fourth in the election was a “denial of democracy” in a post on X. “We are entering a regime crisis,” Faure said.

The veteran conservative figure was the latest name to surface in whirlwind negotiations this week. Former premier Bernard Cazeneuve, top civil servant Thierry Beaudet and conservative heavyweight Xavier Bertrand were all briefly rumored to be in the running for the job before being waved aside.

Pressure was building on the French president to break the deadlock with the French returning to work on Monday after the traditional summer break and ahead of a looming deadline for the start of the 2025 budget talks in parliament next month.

Barnier emerged as front-runner on late Wednesday, just hours before his official nomination. As first reported by Playbook Paris, Barnier was in talks with Macron at the Elysée Palace late that day, according to three people with knowledge of the talks who, like others quoted in this story, were granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter.

It quickly became clear that the ex-Brexit negotiator ticked all of Macron’s boxes. As a conservative grandee, he had the support of Les Républicains, but, at 73 years old, he will be the oldest premier in the history of the Fifth Republic — and would not rival younger allies with presidential ambitions.

Barnier takes over for Gabriel Attal, France’s youngest-ever prime minister. Attal will return to the National Assembly as head of the pro-Macron Renaissance group.

Caution on the right

Barnier will depend on support from the centrist and right-leaning blocs in the National Assembly, but he does not have an absolute majority backing him. Together, the pro-Macron coalition and the conservative Republican Right group total 213 seats, below the 289 needed to have an outright majority.

Crucially, the far-right National Rally might abstain from trying to immediately vote him out. That would give Barnier some margin to maneuver but also propel Marine Le Pen’s party as the kingmakers of any future government.

National Rally leader Jordan Bardella said his party would wait to render judgement on Barnier until the new prime minister delivers the traditional presentation of policy objectives in the National Assembly.

    Tous ceux qui ont accepté Lisbonne sont irrécupérables. Point. Vous pouvez le trouver aussi franc que vous voulez: il a été commissaire européen. Le fait qu’il parle ouvertement de la tutelle européenne ne change rien à l’affaire. Ou plutôt si, c’est même pire, puisqu’il est favorable à cette tutelle! Il en parle, et personne ne réagit. Lui ou un dissimulateur, aucune différence! Mon avis n’engage que moi, mais vous avez eu grand tort de donner une forme élogieuse à cette vidéo.     Je suis très étonné de l’extrême indulgence de M Asselineau à l’égard de M Barnier et du crédit d’intentions particulièrement étendu qu’il lui accorde .
    J’ai du mal à suivre sa logique vis à vis d’un homme qui été de tous les mauvais coups qui ont mis la France là où elle se trouve aujourd’hui.
    Ou alors, le personnel politique de qualité à peu près correcte pour représenter la France à l’international fait tellement défaut qu’il n’y a plus que quelques M Barnier à solliciter comme ultime bouée de secours.
    J’avoue ma perplexité et la persistance de mon inquiétude pour la suite ……

    Ou quelle naïveté coupable !!!
    Barnier est un européiste absolu et n’a évidemment plus rien de gaulliste. Il trompe son monde, c’est tout! Comme Macron qui a plusieurs fois osé se référer à de Gaulle, alors qu’il est son exact contraire.
    On s’en fiche de sa carrière, d’ailleurs très largement à Bruxelles !, qui montre surtout qu’il a eu l’échine très souple et les dents très longues.
    Barnier, premier ministre, c’est une TRÈS mauvaise nouvelle pour la France, précisément parce qu’il va embobiner les français pour encore plus d’UE.
