Italians Refuse to ‘Eat Ze Bugs’

ER Editor: On the grapevine we’re heard that the whole eating of insects ‘thing’ is really just a move to wake people up. Well, it seems to have worked in Italy. Kudos.

A reminder that insects carry not only the harmful protein, chitin, but also their own parasites. Nobody should be eating them, needless to say. Check out the short video in the tweet below for several long worms being pulled out of a grasshopper.

Tightened up on the sale of insect meal, Italy passes 4 decrees – In short

Of note:

“Today 4 decrees were signed concerning 4 different flours deriving from insects, i.e. foods not traditionally present in the diet. One can feed on what is considered most suitable” but “as regards cricket flour, a migratory locust, mealworm and yellow maggot, we think we need labeling that specifies in a timely and visible way which products derive from these insects”.

This was announced by the Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida in a joint press conference together with the Minister of Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, and of Health, Orazio Schillaci. The decrees were signed jointly by the 3 ministries.

“What the decrees provide for is a label with the origin of the product, the risks associated with consumption and the quantity of insect meal present, but we have also provided special shelves where they can be displayed in shops”, so that “those who want to choose crickets, larvae and locusts can go there and those who don’t want to, as I imagine most Italians, can keep away”, explained Lollobrigida.

With this provision, he added, “in full agreement with the Regions, we guarantee Italian citizens the awareness of what they eat and make Italy a nation at the forefront in this sense”. Europe has authorized the trade of flours with insects but “citizens must know what they eat for this reason we foresee certification so that those who want to consume them can do so but those who do not want to consume them can do the same”.

Italians Refuse to ‘Eat Ze Bugs’

The Times has more:

The growing use in cooking of flour made from crickets, locusts and insect larvae has met fierce opposition in Italy, where the Government is to ban its use in pizza and pasta and segregate it on supermarket shelves.

In a sign of fear that insects might be associated with Italian cuisine, three Government ministers called a press conference in Rome to announce four decrees aimed at a crackdown. “It’s fundamental that these flours are not confused with food made in Italy,” Francesco Lollobrigida, the agriculture minister, said.

Packed with vitamins, proteins and minerals, flour made from crickets is increasingly seen as an ecological way to obtain nutrients, and the market is forecast to reach $3.5 billion by 2029. The EU has already authorised foods made from crickets, locusts and the darkling beetle larva. In January mealworm larvae was added to the list.

All four insects are cited in the Italian decrees, which will require any products containing them to be labelled with large lettering and displayed separately from other foods.

“Whoever wants to eat these products can, but those who don’t, and I imagine that will be most Italians, will be able to choose,” Lollobrigida said.

When historians look back and wonder what thwarted the Great Reset, perhaps the Italian refusal to ruin their beloved pasta and pizza will be seen as the catalyst.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
