ER Editor: As Dutch journalist Michel van der Kemp notes in his review of the current situation in Brazil, things are on a bit of a knife edge today and tomorrow as Bolsonaro has already exited the country leaving the top general in the military, General Hamilton Mourao (see featured image) to step in until tomorrow’s expected inauguration of Lula. The military are perfectly aware of the election steal, reminded daily by protesting Brazilians, so will tomorrow go ahead as planned?

Has Bolsonaro conceded the Brazilian elections?

Brazil is bracing itself for the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Lula) on Sunday, January 1st 2023, as the 39th President. The ceremony is to be held in the National Congress in the capital Brasilia on that day. Millions of Bolsonaro supporters are expected to be present to protest what they believe to be a stolen election.
On Friday (Dec. 30th) President Jair Bolsonaro gave a speech online, virtually the first speech since the October 30 elections. The speech has been explained away by several media as Bolsonaro having conceded the elections.
For example, Gateway Pundit reported that Bolsonaro conceded because he has “no support from other institutions to act against Lula”. They close their report by saying: “And with this statement [from the President], Brazil joins the Marxist ranks in South America.”
The reactions in the streets and online are more of a mixed bag. Some of Bolsonaro’s supporters are left disappointed, and they feel the president has betrayed their cause (after 61 days of peaceful protests!). Others are pointing out that the speech has a Trumpian nature, full of hidden messages.
Citizen journalist MickyD2 gives a literal breakdown of Bolsonaro’s speech, and shows that the president’s words are multi-interpretable. At the end of the video he also gives us a couple of scenarios on how he thinks things will move on from here.
No matter how you look at the speech, the people are still protesting en masse throughout the country. They all seem determined in their cause: to prevent Lula from stealing the elections.
Further, we are seeing reports that the military is now openly protecting the protests. There’s another report that Lula minions were trying to seize tents from protesters, but when the military responded, they quickly left the scene.
It shows that tensions are high. Bolsonaro supporters from all over the country are heading to the capital Brasilia. The sitting President has reportedly left the country for Florida, as his socialist opponent seeks to have him arrested in a political prosecution. Bolsonaro is expected to spend some time at Mar-a-Lago with the Trump family, although he was first seen at the house of UFC fighter José Aldo.
Although it must be hard for the Brazilians to see their Captain, their President, leave the country, perhaps this changes nothing. After all it is not Bolsonaro who decides the future of the country, nor is it Lula. It always was the Brazilians who decide this. It’s either that, or it’s the end of democracy.
