Massive power blackout hits Spain and Portugal

The Daily Mail has this from last night —

Spain has declared a state of emergency after a nationwide power blackout hit most of the Iberian peninsula, leaving roads gridlocked and prompting people to clear supermarket shelves.

The country’s Interior Ministry added the emergency status will be applied in the regions that request it – amid fears the chaos could last for days.

The outage has caused madness across the nation with the interior ministry deploying 30,000 police officers countrywide to maintain security in an evening of darkness.

It comes after huge queues formed outside shops and banks as residents, tourists desperately sought to stockpile essentials and take out cash as they could amid the uncertainty.

Rows of cars were pictured lining up at petrol stations as people hoped to fill up their vehicles and fuel cans, with expats detailing how they have tried to power generators to keep their homes going.

Airports have also been hit by the outages, with flights delayed and cancelled and holidaymakers in Portugal warned by the country’s flagship airline TAP Air not to travel until further notice.

Trains and metro services were shut down in both Spain and Portugal, with people stuck in tunnels and on railway tracks, forcing evacuations.

So far, Madrid, Andalusia and Extremadura have asked for the central government to take over public order and other functions.

Earlier, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told reporters that the cause of the unprecedented power outages remain unknown – but added power has now been restored to around 60 per cent of the country.

Portugal’s acting Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said the country expects to see power fully restored ‘within hours’ – but this may take longer than in Spain, which relies on contributions from France and Morocco, not solely its own resources, as Portugal does.

Spain’s Mr Sanchez said in a national address: ‘We do not yet have conclusive information on the reasons for this (power) cut, so I ask the people, as we have done in past crises, to inform themselves through official channels. CONTINUE READING HERE FOR MORE DETAILS & PHOTOS

Over-Reliance On Renewables Behind Catastrophic Blackouts in Spain

Six days ago, the media celebrated a significant milestone: Spain’s national grid operated entirely on renewable energy for the first time during a weekday.

At 12:35 pm today local time, the lights went out across Spain and Portugal, and parts of France. Although power was quickly restored in France, it could take a week to fully restore power in Spain and Portugal.

In an instant, the electric hum of modern life — trains, hospitals, airports, phones, traffic lights, cash registers — fell silent. Tens of millions of people instantly plunged into chaos, confusion, and darkness. People got stuck in elevators. Subways stopped between stations. Gas stations couldn’t pump fuel. Grocery stores couldn’t process payments. Air traffic controllers scrambled as systems failed and planes were diverted. In hospitals, backup generators sputtered on, but in many cases could not meet full demand. Cell towers collapsed under surges and outages.

It was one of the largest peacetime blackouts Europe has ever seen. And it was not random. It was not an unforeseeable event. It was the exact failure that many of us have been, repeatedly, warning lawmakers about for years — warnings that Europe’s political leaders systematically chose to ignore. The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
