Russia adds ‘LGBT movement’ to list of terrorist, extremist entities

Russia has announced the inclusion of the “international LGBT movement” to a blacklist, declaring the movement and its members as “terrorists and extremists.”
The country’s federal financial monitoring service, known as Rosfinmonitoring, added the Western group to its list of terrorists and extremists, which will enable authorities to freeze its bank accounts without a court order.
President Vladimir Putin is known for portraying and emphasizing family values and traditional morals in Russia.
Rosfinmonitoring possesses the authority to immobilize the bank accounts of over 14,000 individuals and organizations classified as extremists and terrorists. The list encompasses a wide spectrum, ranging from al-Qaeda to the US technology corporation Meta.
The listing was in accordance with a judgment made by the supreme court of Russia in November of last year, which classified LGBT activists as extremists.
Early this month, Russia’s justice ministry added the “international LGBT movement” to its list of banned organizations.
Last year, Russia banned gender-affirming surgery, with Duma chairman Vyacheslav Volodin calling gender reassignment “a path to degeneration.”
In 2022, Russia banned “gay propaganda” among adults, outlawing the expression of “non-traditional sexual relations” in public and in the media. In 2013, it was banned among minors.
President Vladimir Putin is known for portraying and emphasizing family values and traditional morals that are in striking contrast with decadent Western attitudes.
