Red stronghold: FPÖ overtakes Social Democrats in Vienna

The FPÖ breaks one poll record after another. According to a survey, the Freedom Party is now the strongest force even in the federal capital – the stronghold of social democracy –. An election victory in Vienna would be a first.

A survey conducted by the Austrian polling institute IFDD on behalf of the Kronen Zeitung comes to a remarkable result: According to this, the FPÖ is currently ahead of the SPÖ in Vienna in the Sunday poll for the National Council elections.

According to the survey, the Freedom Party achieved 27 percent and the Social Democrats 26 percent. The Greens follow with 13 percent and the conservative ÖVP with 12 percent.

In fact, the FPÖ has never been able to win more votes than the SPÖ in a National Council election in the Austrian capital. In the last National Council elections in 2024, the SPÖ received 29.9 percent in Vienna, while the FPÖ only achieved 20.7 percent. In 2019, the SPÖ was also clearly ahead of the Freedom Party with 27.1 percent, which at that time received 12.8 percent.

Vienna is traditionally considered a left-wing stronghold, characterized by urban academic milieus and immigrant families. At the beginning of 2025, 36 percent of Viennese people had foreign citizenship and 46 percent had foreign origin. Even if not all persons from these groups are eligible to vote, the statistics show the demographic and cultural difference with the rest of the country.

Nevertheless, the result fits into the trend across Austria: The FPÖ is clearly ahead in current polls.

The PolitPro election trend currently sees it at 37 percent, ahead of the ÖVP with 20 percent and the SPÖ with 18.3 percent. Compared to the 2024 National Council elections, this would be an increase of a good eight points for the Freedom Party. If this trend were to become entrenched in Vienna, the FPÖ would not only dominate nationwide, but would also seriously overtake the SPÖ in the most important red bastion of the republic.

After lengthy negotiations, a three-party coalition of the ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS under Chancellor Christian Stocker has governed Austria since March 2025. Previously, the FPÖ was also able to participate in the government: Party leader Herbert Kickl was tasked with forming a government following the Freedom Party’s election victory, but talks with the ÖVP failed. Since then, the coalition has primarily acted as an alliance of convenience against the threat of new elections.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
