ER Editor: These letters of protest reminded us, somewhat with surprise, of what the university system is supposed to be about. We doubt if the Woke Crew of anglo-saxon universities would be likely to write such stinging letters. Of course they wouldn’t.

Italian Universities in an Uproar Against The “Green Pass” and Mandatory Vaccination
Faced with the imposition of the “Green Pass” by the Rector of the University of Padua, Professor Andrea Camperio Ciani has handed in his “pass” to the Rector, resigned from his courses and demands to be formally removed from the Chair of Evolutionary Psychology he holds; he also declares that he accepts not to be paid anymore. Prof. Camperio Ciani wrote an open letter to the Rector and the Ministers of Health and Education, dated August 25, 2021, an excerpt of which we quote here.
“I cherished the illusion that the university had learned the principles of freedom and democracy – such is not the case.
“I have the honor of being the great-grandson of Costanzo Zenoni, who gave up the chair of anatomy at the University of Milan so as not to have to take the card of the Fascist party. My ancestors were patriots, heroes and thinkers, and they passed on to me the ideal of the university as a home for freedom and democracy. I see that this is not the case at all and I take full responsibility for it (…). In the name of freedom, for all the anti-vax people whose ideas I do not share (…) I consider that discriminating against them is a liberticidal and obscurantist act.”
Open letter from professors Pacini and Trabuco (excerpts)
“In the past, it has already happened that in the name of an ideology, discriminatory methods have been adopted (…) that have divided the population, restricting, even to the point of using violence, the fundamental freedoms of some (…). In those dark times, it was university teachers who rebelled, at the cost of losing their jobs and being ostracized by an academic system under the control of the political power of the moment. We are willing to regain their courage and stand firm against Green Pass and all that it entails. The university is supposed to be a place (…) of freedom, confrontation and growth, rather than a place where minds are indoctrinated… For many years we have spoken in the lecture halls about democracy, resistance and politics, only to become complicit in everything that is frontally opposed to it… The imposition of this green pass marks one of the worst moments in Italian history. As teachers we are the guardians above all of knowledge that is the path to freedom. We will defend it, as well as the right to education (…) and to the realization of a better world.”

In addition, a teachers’ appeal was written by university professors Guido Cappelli, Giuseppe Germano and Antonietta Iacono: “The Green Pass is a pass to discrimination”. The appeal has since been signed by many academics. Here are some excerpts:
“More and more citizens are witnessing in anguish and amazement an authoritarian and transhumanist drift at a national and global level… disregarding the laws and Constitutions that have cost previous generations so much struggle and sacrifice, even life… an aggressiveness of power never seen even in relation to the darkest periods of our history, pervasive violence, unscrupulous propaganda apparatuses that know no bounds, all of it saturated with a go-with-the-flow mentality : all of this heralds a kind of genetic mutation of the ruling class and their relationship to the population. ”
“Human relations have been neutered and reconstructed from the top down by rules of distancing that are supposed to become permissive, dictated by a deaf power and a swarm of so-called experts charged with rewriting interpersonal relations… This has set in motion a process of annihilation of self-determination for which no historical precedent is known.”
“We are intellectuals intervening in the humanities and social sciences. We call for a collective awareness that turns into rational, peaceful but energetic action, in order to confront a challenge that would otherwise be likely to turn our society into an unmovable dystopia.”
In addition to professors, scientists and students have also joined this form of resistance. While the rector of the University of Padua Rizzuto urged students to get vaccinated by email in July, Dr. Sara Collauto wrote an 18-page letter in which she set out to dismantle his arguments one by one. A few lines from it:
“For my part, I find it difficult to understand your decision not to justify your assertions from a scientific point of view, a gesture that I consider very daring in an academic environment where the study and analysis of objective data should constitute the very essence of a rational, lucid discourse, in search of the truth and devoid of any external influence. If this is not the case at the university, then where will it be found? What hope of progress would there be for science, culture, or politics?”
For their part, students at the University of Bergamo wrote their own letter in early September, addressing it to the Academic Senate, researchers, and the entire faculty. Here is a short excerpt:
“In a context of planned chaos of norms and statistics, where very little verifiable and observable remains and where those who dictate the laws are often the most authoritative – but less authoritative – scientists, it seems to us that the university is at a turning point. It may be that we are facing the terrible possibility of a regression from the modern principles of the experimental scientific method, with the return to the opacity (…) of the principle of authority, set in the stone of a Science that no one has the right to contest. It would be more exact and undoubtedly healthier, to take the way of freedom rather than that of fear and control… It could well be that (…) we, the addressees and the authors of this letter, are the builders of the future. From this day forward, each of us, individually, will bear the responsibility.”
