Catalonia abolishes the Covid-19 passport

The Catalan government recognizes that a large part of the population is susceptible to infection by the virus and that, under these conditions, the passport loses its effectiveness. Therefore, the Covid Commission decided last Wednesday, January 26, to withdraw the Covid certificate mandatory for gyms and restaurants.
The decision of the delegated commission was adopted after evaluating the report of the committee of experts of the Generalitat and published its decision in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat of Catalonia (DOGC) on Thursday. This measure came into effect yesterday, Friday 28 January.
The variant Omicron signals the end of restrictions
According to the government, “it has been shown that the Omicron variant has an immune escape effect and therefore decreases the prevention of infections, compared to the Delta variant,” as stated in the document of the committee of experts.
In this sense, “an important part of the population is again susceptible to infection by the virus, regardless of their vaccination status or the fact that they have already contracted the disease,” the statement adds. For this reason, “the effectiveness of the mandatory use of the Covid certificate is decreasing”.
An update on the epidemiological data in Catalonia:
An average of 30,000 new cases per day
An average of 50 deaths per day
3,000 patients admitted to hospital
Declining occupancy of intensive care units
An increase in infections, but without risk
The Minister of Health of the Catalan government, Josep Maria Argimon, said last week: “If I had known that the Omicron variant was what it was, I obviously would not have taken these restrictions.”
Regarding the end of the restrictions, the head of epidemiology of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Antoni Trilla, told Catalunya Ràdio on Thursday that he thought it was likely that there would be an increase in infections, but that he did not see a “serious health risk” for the majority of the population.
Towards the end of the pandemic in Spain
The government’s decision confirms the de-escalation that has taken place over the past two weeks. Last week, Catalonia lifted the curfew, which had been in effect since December 24. From Friday, the limitations to a maximum of ten people in social gatherings and the reduction of gauges and opening hours in the restaurant, culture and sports sectors, will also be lifted.
However, the Ministry of Health does not rule out the use of the Covid passport for the reopening of nightclubs scheduled for February, and masks are still mandatory in the street. (ER: It’s as if the psychological effect of ‘control’ still has to be maintained.)
Catalonia plans, from April, to stop counting new infections and to stop carrying out the planned quarantines. A change in the management of the pandemic that comes close to what was announced a few days ago by the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, who announced that the country was on its way to controlling Covid-19. That is, treating the disease as an endemic (like the flu) and not as a pandemic. In mid-January, Carolina Darias, Spain’s Minister of Health, said she wanted to initiate discussion at the European level and move “towards the end of exceptionality.”
