This weekend, Ukraine retaliated with attacks on the Russian city of Belgorod (see map below), lying within Russian territory. Video reports show attacks were aimed at civilian areas.

Moscow retaliates for Ukrainian ‘terrorist attack’ – MOD
Russia’s military has conducted a string of high-precision missile strikes targeting Ukrainian military facilities and officials in response to the Ukrainian strike on Belgorod on Saturday that left more than 20 civilians dead, the Defense Ministry has said.
In a statement on Sunday, the ministry said that Moscow’s forces had struck decision-making centers and other military targets in the city of Kharkov, not far from the border between the two countries.

The strike on Saturday by Ukrainian forces on Belgorod is the “worst” since the start of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a Telegram post. In a separate post in the early hours of Sunday, he added that the death toll has grown to 24.
The shelling also left a total of 108 people injured, the governor wrote on Telegram. The material damage sustained by the city in the strike is still being assessed, Gladkov said, adding that additional public servants from nearby towns had been engaged to speed up this process.
The strike damaged more than 100 vehicles, most of which were “totally destroyed” or burnt, according to Gladkov. A large number of commercial facilities, including shops, stores and malls, were damaged as well, he added. Some gas and water supply systems in the city were also hit, according to the governor.
In a post on Sunday morning, Gladkov wrote that 30 apartment blocks and several houses were damaged.
The regional authorities decided to cancel all public gatherings and festivities in all territories bordering Ukraine, as well as in the city of Belgorod itself, which is located some 40km away from the border, Gladkov said. The governor also informed President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin about the incident and its aftermath.
The Russian Defense Ministry has said that the attack on the city involved the use of cluster munitions. Such weapons comprise dozens of small submunitions that can be scattered over a large area by an initial detonation, which can then also explode, causing a large number of smaller secondary blasts. More than 110 nations banned them under a UN convention in 2008 due to their grave danger to civilians.
According to the ministry, the Ukrainian military equipped the missiles of its Olkha multiple rocket launcher with cluster bomb warheads before firing them at Belgorod. Russian air defense forces managed to intercept most of the projectiles but some still struck the city. Had all of them reached their target, the consequences would have been “immeasurably more severe,” the ministry added.

Russia confirms ‘massive barrage’ on targets in Ukraine
An overnight operation added to 50 group strikes conducted throughout the week, the Defense Ministry reported

The Russian Defense Ministry has confirmed that its forces launched a series of air attacks against multiple targets in Ukraine in the last week. A statement from the ministry on Friday detailed 50 “group” strikes and a single “massive” barrage using precision missiles and drones.
The ministry described the intended targets as “defense industry sites, military airfield infrastructure and depots for the storage of artillery munitions, naval drones, arms and fuel for military vehicles,” as well as troop positions. All of them were successfully hit, the statement added.
Valery Zaluzhny, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, reported earlier in the day that at least 158 separate launches were detected by Kiev’s troops on Thursday evening and Friday morning. He claimed that of the total, 27 drones and 87 cruise missiles were intercepted.
Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yury Ignat said in a televised statement that “we have never seen so many targets on our monitors simultaneously.”
Officials in various parts of the country claimed damage to several warehouses and a metro station in Kiev, among other locations.

About a thousand kilometers separate Lviv in Ukraine’s west and Kharkiv in the east.
“We haven’t seen so much red on our monitors for a long time,” Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said, adding that Russia used a combination of hypersonic, cruise and ballistic missiles to strike targets.
The Ukrainian Air Force on Friday said it shot down 114 of the 158 drones and missiles fired by Russia.
In Kyiv, an apartment building, metro station and warehouse were damaged, killing at least one person and injuring seven others, according to the city’s mayor on Telegram.
In the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, a maternity hospital and a shopping centre were targeted, while the northeastern city of Kharkiv came under “massive rocket fire,” the cities’ mayors said on Telegram.
“In total, 26 people were killed and more than 120 people were injured in Ukraine as a result of the mass shelling in the morning,” Oleksii Kuleba, deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, said Friday afternoon.
“There are people killed by Russian missiles today that were launched at civilian facilities, civilian buildings,” presidential aide Andriy Yermak said on Telegram.
“We are doing everything to strengthen our air shield. But the world needs to see that we need more support and strength to stop this terror,” he added.

The assault comes days after Ukraine bombed a Russian warship in Crimea, striking a major blow against Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, but amid signs of slipping Western support for Ukraine, with fierce debate in the United States about continued military aid for the country’s push-back against Russia.
