Radio Free Europe will close in Bulgaria and Romania

.

ER Editor: Here’s an interesting tweet on today’s Radio Free Europe, and why it’s outlived its value, now just a vehicle for deep state propaganda at American taxpayer expense. You know, the US is ‘nazi’ under Trump, Russia is a threat. This video by a Romanian journalist unpacks a little of the deep state agenda evident among RFE Romanian staff —

Cute and quite likely true (scroll down) —

This linked report (MSM alert) from Balkan Insight references the closure last November of RFE in Hungary, and that Moldova’s service may close down in the near future if it doesn’t find ‘external funding’ —

Radio Free Europe’s Bulgaria, Romania Services to Close

We find the France Soir reporting below to be rather naive.

Radio Free Europe will close in Bulgaria and Romania

Svobodna Evropa, the Bulgarian service of Radio Free Europe (RFE) historically financed by the CIA, must stop its operations on March 31 due to lack of American funding, AFP learned on Wednesday from two members of its editorial staff, a few weeks after an announcement similar in Romania.

The team is actively working to implement a solution that “will allow us to continue serving our audience”, said one of the sources within the Bulgarian website, requesting anonymity pending an official communication.

In Romania, the director of the Romanian language service, Free Europe Romania, Elena Vijulie Tanase, announced its closure also on March 31, in a post on Facebook published a fortnight ago.

“It’s definitely bad news. And not just for my colleagues and me, she wrote, emphasizing that there were only “a handful of professional journalists left, and the times demand our work on so many fronts”.

Contacted, RFE management in Prague did not respond to AFP’s questions.

These closures come after the announcement of that of Radio Free Europe in Hungary at the end of November.

The American administration had committed to closing Szabad Europa to satisfy Hungarian nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a friend of Donald Trump whom he had visited in early November.

Bulgaria and Romania were among the first countries covered by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty when it was created in 1950.

Radio, funded in part by the CIA until the early 1970s, played a key role in disseminating information beyond the Iron Curtain, despite repeated attempts by communist authorities to jam its signal.

In the mid-1970s, the Bulgarian service broadcast a series of critical columns by dissident Georgi Markov. The writer was assassinated in 1978 in London in the so-called “Bulgarian Umbrella” affair, one of the most emblematic episodes of the Cold War.

Programs in Bulgarian were interrupted in 2004, and those in Romanian in 2008, before being relaunched in both countries in 2019.

The Bulgarian editorial team, made up of around fifteen journalists, brings together experienced professionals and young reporters. It has established itself through a strong presence on social networks, in particular thanks to video formats which frequently reach tens of thousands of views.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
