Syria – Trying to Make It Make Sense

ER Editor: Can anyone make sense of the stories coming out about Syria? As stated, we believe none of it. The original problem in the 2010’s was more or less sorted by arguably the greatest military nation right now, Russia, with its equally impressive intelligence gathering forces. Here are three recent Politico reports, which are leaving us with questions —

Syrians face return to a shattered nation

Many of the millions of Syrians who have fled their county will question whether they can return, given the destruction and fears of continuing violence.

Many of the more than 6 million Syrians who have fled their country since the start of its civil war in 2011 may now be hoping that the fall of Bashar Assad’s repressive regime will finally allow them to return.

But it’s unlikely to be that simple. The nation is utterly shattered by war, to say nothing of the devastating earthquakes of 2023. Syria’s water and healthcare infrastructure is broken and the country needs billions of dollars for aid and reconstruction.

Assad’s flight is certainly a turning point in its civil war, which began in March 2011 when the military opened fire on unarmed protesters demanding greater freedom and political reforms, but it doesn’t mean the conflict is over.

The sudden (ER: on steroids) collapse of Assad’s dictatorship offers a glimmer of hope for Syrians abroad, but the plight of their crippled country means that going home won’t be an easy decision. Many have become integrated in their new homes, or may fear that fighting will flare up among the different rebel groups, presenting a particular threat to minorities. Some have no homes to go back to.

A Sudden Reversal of Previous Policy

So why would EU countries be suddenly willing to STOP asylum applications or deport people in these circumstances after years of madness over admitting illegals? Oh right, those elections, recent or future, of ‘far-right’ parties in EU countries. Or ‘we only took them in because Assad was a brutal dictator’. Which has never been proven.

This abrupt change-of-heart, ‘let’s deport them’ approach applies to a whole group of EU countries. Is any of this actually TRUE? —

Austria prepares to deport Syrian migrants after Assad regime falls

Belgium, Germany, Greece and Austria said they will halt Syrian asylum applications one day after rebel forces ousted the country’s dictator.

BRUSSELS — Austria has announced plans to deport Syrian migrants following the fall of the country’s dictator Bashar Assad to rebel forces after 13 years of civil war, while Belgium, France, Greece and Germany are pausing Syrian asylum applications.

“I have instructed the ministry to prepare an orderly return and deportation program to Syria,” Interior Minister Gerhard Karner told Austrian media, without clarifying which migration statuses would be targeted. Some 100,000 Syrians live in Austria, according to the country’s statistics agency.

One day after Syrian rebel factions, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) — designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and the United Kingdom — took Damascus, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Greece, and Germany are using the success of the rebels to revise their migration policies, with all five closing their doors to asylum seekers. The U.K. has also said it will stop processing asylum applications from Syrians.

The decisions to revise the asylum policies come as anti-immigrant far-right parties have surged in popularity across the European Union in recent months. Germany, for example, faces snap elections in February, with far-right parties currently performing strongly in the polls.

Refugee rights and aid organizations cautioned that the decision to halt asylum applications comes too soon, pointing to continued fighting in parts of Syria and questions around political stability.

The following title is truly comical and underscores why the fall of the ‘dictator’ Assad doesn’t necessarily lead to a better outcome for anyone. Unless it’s all false, of course —

Germany and France agree to work with Syrian rebels on ‘basis of fundamental human rights’

Western capitals are debating how to engage with the Syrian rebels, who are led by a group that is a designated terrorist organization.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron have agreed to work with the Syrian opposition groups that took power in Damascus “on the basis of fundamental human rights and the protection of ethnic and religious minorities,” Berlin said in a statement Monday.

The decision came during a phone call the French and German leaders held Monday. It comes after rebel forces ousted dictator Bashar Assad and took control of Syria on Sunday, following 13 years of bloody civil war in which over half a million people were killed.

Western capitals are debating how to engage with the Syrian rebels, who are led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which the U.S. and U.K. have designated as a terrorist organization. HTS and its leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani were previously affiliated with al Qaeda, but cut ties with the group in 2016. Since then, al-Golani has attempted to portray his group as more moderate.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday it was “far too early” to discuss reviewing HTS’ terror designation.
