Steinmeier frees Bundestag on – way to new elections
Federal President Steinmeier has dissolved the Bundestag. This clears the way for new elections. The federal election is scheduled for the 23rd February. Chancellor Scholz had previously lost the no-confidence vote in the Bundestag.

As expected, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved the Bundestag today. This clears the way for new elections. The federal election is scheduled for February.
The parliamentary leaders of the CDU and SPD had already agreed on the election date. The dissolution of the Bundestag was preceded by a vote of confidence in Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Scholz asked the question of trust after the traffic light coalition had previously broken up in the dispute over the budget.
Steinmeier based his decision on the fact that a stable and capable government is needed in difficult times.
“That is why I am convinced that new elections are the right way for the benefit of our country”, said the Federal President.
However, it is questionable whether it will be possible to establish stable government relationships in Germany. Political stability is over in both the UK and France. In Germany, the conditions are similarly difficult. The established parties want to maintain Ukraine’s support. At the same time, the EU debt rules must be observed. On top of that, extensive investments are urgently needed to avoid falling behind. The high energy prices caused by the sanctions regime are weighing on the German economy and households. There is also not much scope for a new government that is sticking to the confrontational course towards Russia.
In the history of the Federal Republic, the question of trust has only been asked six times. It is actually considered an instrument of discipline. Olaf Scholz, on the other hand, wanted to reach new elections and lose the vote. He achieved the goal.
