Romania’s Georgescu Banned From Appearing In Media As State Accuses Him Of ‘Fascism, Attempted Coup’

Update(11:25ET): Prosecutors have revealed that police have raided nearly 50 addresses of people and associations connected with Romanian presidential front-runner Calin Georgescu, who has denied all wrongdoing and said state authorities are trying to block his candidacy.

Georgescu will reportedly be released from a hours-long detention by police for questioning. But emerging reports say he’s been charged with ‘attempted coup’ and advancing ‘false information’. Reuters has summarized the charges against him include forming an antisemitic organization (ER: The Classic!), promoting war criminals and fascist organizations, and communicating false information.

A Romanian Court Press Release cites “attempted incitement against the constitutional order” (coup), “spreading false information,” as well as “false statements on campaign funding,” and links to “fascist, xenophobic, and antisemitic organizations.”

According to Romanian news channel Digi24, prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for him and have begun searching the premises of his close associates, including mercenary leader Horațiu Potra and Georgescu’s bodyguard.

Romanian news channel Antena 3 CNN reported Georgescu is being questioned in connection with the financing of his election campaign last year.

Prosecutors suspect 27 people of acting against Romania’s constitutional order, public incitement, initiation of a fascist organization and false statements regarding the sources of financing an election campaign, but they didn’t name Georgescu or his aides in their statement.

However, shortly after news of the raids broke Wednesday morning, Georgescu claimed that the searches were aimed at blocking his new presidential candidacy.

Romania was plunged into political chaos late last year when Georgescu, a pro-Russian, far-right firebrand and NATO skeptic, won the first round of the presidential vote and was scheduled to face reformist Elena Lasconi in the second round.

However, the Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the presidential election after an alleged Russian operation to influence the result.

The court’s decision sparked controversy, as both far-right parties and the liberal reformists of Lasconi’s USR party viewed the annulment as an attempt by widely distrusted old establishment parties — the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the center-right National Liberal Party (PNL) — to hold on to power by pulling strings within the judiciary.

The new election is scheduled to be held on May 4, with a runoff planned two weeks later on May 18.

In early February, Romania’s outgoing liberal president, Klaus Iohannis, stepped down amid the acrimony. “I have never violated the Constitution,” he said in his resignation speech. “From here, everyone loses, no one wins.”

Adding to the brouhaha, top figures in the conservative U.S. government claimed that Romania’s electoral crisis was an example of Europe allegedly cracking down on democracy and free speech. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance blasted Romania’s highest court for its winter ruling.

“When we see European courts canceling elections and senior officials threatening to cancel others, we ought to ask whether we’re holding ourselves to an appropriately high standard,” Vance said.

“To many of us on the other side of the Atlantic, it looks more and more like old entrenched interests hiding behind ugly, Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation, who simply don’t like the idea that somebody with an alternative viewpoint might express a different opinion, or God forbid vote a different way, or even worse, win an election,” Vance added.

Tech billionaire and X owner Elon Musk — who is a close adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump — also lashed out at the Constitutional Court judges, calling them “tyrants.”
