Mercosur Deal Accepted by EU Ambassadors Despite Protests

ER Editor: We actually believe not a word of this, but it is what is being reported at this hour. Designed to inflame citizens and the agricultural sector, that is what we believe is happening. Notice it is at the level of ambassador that this deal is being passed. Who voted for them? Oh, and it’s only taken 25 years to get this deal through, per Politico

EU countries approve Mercosur trade deal after 25 years of talks

BRUSSELS — A qualified majority of EU member countries on Friday approved the bloc’s long-awaited trade deal with the South American Mercosur bloc, four EU diplomats said.

France, Poland, Austria, Ireland and Hungary expressed their opposition while Belgium abstained. Italy voted in favor, after forcing a delay last month.

EU capitals now have until 5 p.m. on Friday to lodge any objections and formalize the vote. This so-called written procedure gives political backing to the informal approval delivered by the Brussels-based ambassadors.

The EU-Mercosur deal is set to create the world’s largest free trade area, covering some 700 million people. From Brussels’ perspective, the agreement is a major geopolitical win in light of China’s rising share in trade and influence in Latin America.

And conveniently, it’s another failure for Macron (v2.0), who couldn’t get it stopped. A national leader cannot protect his citizens (messaging). It’s all about the messaging —

France’s failure to stop Mercosur will sting Macron forever

Mercosur Deal Accepted by EU Ambassadors Despite Protests

EU ambassadors have given Brussels the green light to sign the controversial Mercosur agreement.

TEC NEWS

The majority of EU countries approved on Friday, January 9th a huge but divisive trade deal with the South American bloc Mercosur, diplomats said, giving Brussels the green light to sign an accord championed by business groups but loathed by many European farmers.

A majority of the European Union’s 27 nations voted in favour of the pact at an ambassadors’ meeting in Brussels, despite opposition from France, Ireland, Hungary and Poland concerned about its impact on the agricultural sector, several European diplomats told AFP.

The major concern is that farmers will be undercut by a flow of cheaper goods, including meat, sugar, rice, honey, and soybean, from agricultural giant Brazil and its neighbours.

Farmers across Europe have staged massive protests against the agreement that will likely be signed in Paraguay on Monday.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
