Gibraltar: Passengers stranded as airport terminal floods

.

ER Editor: So the airport in Gibraltar had a ‘burst pipe’, which curiously turned into a ‘major incident.’ One savvy Twitter user said underneath the Youtube video posted below, “Remind me how water in a building can effect [sic] an airplane engine?” We are also curious why the single BA flight to London couldn’t function.

UPDATE:

Airport management have confirmed that normal service has resumed at the airport, albeit with delays.

A burst pipe in the departures terminal at the airport resulted in this morning’s BA flight to Heathrow being cancelled.

The high-pressure main flooded a large part of the airport, including the baggage reclaim are, screening facilities and the server room which controls various airport systems.

Passengers this morning waited outside the airport for hours, awaiting information on the status of today’s flights.

At 11am, the government told GBC that work was underway to restore airport systems in order to be able to resume operations as soon as possible.

No. 6 said areas of the building suffered water damage and that technical, operational and cleaning staff had been working on the major incident since early this morning.

Speaking to GBC this morning, passengers at the airport expressed concern and frustration at the lack of communication from both British Airways and from airport management.

Inbound flights were unaffected, with passengers temporarily directed through alternative facilities.

While the flight to Heathrow was cancelled (ER: significant?) and passengers told to make alternative arrangements, those on other flights were able to board after some delay.

The Chief Minister thanked those who helped out today, saying that unforeseen problems sometimes arise and that the terminal workers did an excellent job in avoiding any further disruption to passengers.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
